UAE E-Invoicing Deadlines & Rules: Your Questions Answered

UAE E-Invoicing get ready with Wafeq

On 28 October 2026, we received more than 80 questions during our webinar, UAE E-Invoicing: Your Questions, Answered. Kunal Devabhai, Sales Manager at Wafeq, interviewed Nadim Alameddine, Founder & CEO of Wafeq.

Many of the questions overlapped, and the same few concerns kept coming up: which deadline applies, what changes for customers and credit notes, and what it all costs. We picked the 13 questions that matter most to UAE businesses right now and answered each one in writing. The answers are based on Ministry of Finance rules and Wafeq’s own product details.

Deadlines and scope

Which deadline applies to me, and how is the AED 50m measured?

The test uses the revenue in your most recent financial statements. If it is AED 50m or more, you must appoint an e-invoicing service provider (ASP) by 30 October 2026 and go live on 1 January 2027. If it is below AED 50m, you must appoint by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027.

If your FY2025 revenue was below AED 50m, you are in the second group. This holds even if your FY2026 revenue has already passed AED 50m.

I’m a new business. How do I know my deadline?

New companies use their projected revenue in place of past financial statements. If you project below AED 50m, you must appoint an ASP by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027.

Is e-invoicing required for B2C sales?

No, not for now. The mandate covers sales to businesses and to government (B2B and B2G). Sales to consumers stay out of scope until the Minister decides otherwise. If you sell to both, your business invoices go through e-invoicing, and your consumer invoices carry on as they do today.

Can I start before my mandatory date?

Yes. The voluntary phase has been open since 1 July 2026, and no penalties apply during it. Starting early lets you test with real invoices before your date arrives.

When do penalties start?

Only from the date you are required to go live. The appointment deadline does not trigger them.

How UAE e-invoicing works

What do I need from my customer, and how do providers talk to each other?

Each business has its own ASP. Your ASP sends the invoice to your customer’s ASP over the Peppol network, and both providers report the transaction to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). This means your business customers need an ASP of their own.

Does the government get access to all my data, like previous years?

No. Each provider reports the tax data for every e-invoice and e-credit note, and the FTA compares the two reports. The FTA does not get access to your accounting system or past books.

Are credit notes and debit notes sent the same way as invoices?

Credit notes go through e-invoicing in the same way as invoices. Debit notes are not part of the framework.

What if I make a mistake on an e-invoice? Can I edit it?

No, you can’t edit an e-invoice once it has been sent. To fix it, you issue an e-credit note, and then a new invoice.

What about invoices my client never pays? Do I still pay the VAT?

E-invoicing doesn’t change when VAT is due. UAE VAT law already includes bad-debt relief, which lets you recover the VAT on qualifying unpaid invoices.

Using Wafeq for e-invoicing

Wafeq FZ-LLC is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Finance as an e-invoicing service provider (ASP ID 129932).

How do I create an e-invoice in Wafeq?

After E-invoicing is set up, you create and approve invoices the same way you do today. Wafeq sends them over Peppol and handles the reporting.

I use my own invoicing tool (or an offline system) and Wafeq only for accounting. What are my options?

You have two options. You can issue your sales invoices from Wafeq. Or you can keep your current tool and connect it through Wafeq E-Invoicing ASP, our API for businesses that run their own systems. If you have no software at all, Wafeq accounting covers everything.

Do providers charge per invoice? How many e-invoices does the Wafeq plan include?

On the Wafeq accounting plans (Starter, Plus and Premium), e-invoicing comes at no extra cost and with no per-invoice fees. Wafeq E-Invoicing ASP, for businesses that run their own systems, is a separate paid product.

Some questions from the session need more space than this post allows. These include exchanging invoices with a supplier who goes live before you do, and handling credit notes for invoices issued before 2027. We’ll answer them in a follow-up post.
